AUGUSTA, Ga.- Annie Laurie Duncan, 82, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Elliott Sons Funeral Home chapel, 1134 Telfair Street, Augusta, with the Rev. Robert E. Thomas officiating. Burial to follow at Summerville Cemetery. Miss Duncan was a resident of Augusta for over 60 years, she retired as a secretary from Graniteville Company and a member of First Alliance Church. Survivors include one brother, J.T. Duncan and his wife, Nita, Martin, S.C.; two nieces, Annette Duncan, Tampa, Fla. and Joanna Priester, Martin, S.C.; three nephews, Gerald Duncan, Las Vegas, Nev., Larry Duncan, Charleston, S.C. and Jimmy Duncan, Martin, S.C. Miss Duncan was preceded in death by her parents, James Thomas Duncan Sr. and Lessie Snelling Duncan and one brother, Harold Duncan. Retired in 1973 as Design Director, Southern Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He was past professor at Trident Technical College, past President of Civil Engineering Club of Charleston, former Board Member with Charleston Zoning Board of Appeals. A member of John Wesley United Methodist Church where he was a lifetime honorary church board member. He is survived by his wife of Charleston; daughter and son-in-law Martha and Russell Herring of Columbia, son and daughter-in-law Jennifer and Charles Dunbar Black, Jr. of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren, Amy Herring, Emily Herring, Carrie Black, Ty Thomas and Rachel Lunn; four sisters, June Furman of Mt. Jack Delacy Snelling
He was born in Millett, SC, and attended Clemson University, and was a Graduate of the University of Georgia. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U. S. Army. He was in the Normandy Invasion, on Utah Beach along the French Coast. He had served during the War, in Europe, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.
He worked for Georgia Pacific as Timber Department Manager, retiring in 1984, with over 38 years of service. He was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, Acacia Lodge #452, F.&A.M.s, the Scottish Rite Consistory- Valley of Savannah, Alee Temple, American Legion Post #135, and VFW Post #660.
Survivors: his wife, Dorothy Brown Snelling of Savannah; son and daughter-in-law, John and Cheryl Snelling of Savannah; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Frank Alsop of Alexandria, VA, Ruthie and Curt Illies of Burlington, KY; sister, Ruth S. Linley of Columbia, SC; granddaughter, Heather Alsop of Alexandria, VA.

MARTIN, S.C. - Mr. J. Aubrey Price, husband of Elisabeth B. Price, died Sunday afternoon in the Lexington Medical Center after an extended illness. He was 90. Mr. Price was born January 26, 1913 the son of the late Robert A. Price and Lila Price. He was owner and operator of the Millett Milling Co. and a veteran of WWII where he received the Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge. He was also a member of the Lower Three Run Baptist Church. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, John A. Price of Columbia and Robert C. Price of Glen Arbor, Mich. There are four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Lower Three Run Baptist Church with burial following in the Lower Three Run Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Paul D. Black who died October 21st, were conducted from the graveside at Speedwell Methodist church on October 23rd at 4 o’clock. The services were in charge of Rev. J.F. Trammel.
Paul DeLacy Black was born March 28th, 1865 in Eufaula, Alabama while his mother was refugeeing during the war between the states. He was the son of Mary Alice Dunbar and Edward Junius Black, prominent pioneer people of South Carolina. He was educated in private schools and was known for his keen wit and tenacity of purpose. When he saw a principle that was right he adhered to that with a singleness of purpose despite adverse opinions.
Mr. Black married Pauline Barker Kirkland on October 12, 1887. She died on February 20, 1938.
Throughout his entire life he was an energetic and zealous Christian worker and was quite active and prominent in political and civic affairs of Allendale County. He served as chairman of the Board of Directors of Allendale County for more than fifteen years. His opinion was valued highly in important matters concerning the welfare of this county. In spite of his failing health he continued to have an unfailing interest in the personal welfare of his friends. One thinks of him in the words of the past. “He lived in a house by the side of the road and was a friend of man.”
He is survived by two daughters, Leize Black and Mrs. J.J. Snelling of Millettville, one son, James Hammond Black of New York City, one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Black Peeples, besides several grandchildren. --1948 - source unknown
Hampton Services for Loring Snelling Ellis, 86, of 405 Oak St. West, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lower Three Runs Baptist Church in Martin with burial following in the church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Mrs. Ellis died Wednesday morning, March 6, 2002 in Hampton Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Allendale County, March 18, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Willie Snelling and Gussie Dunbar Snelling. Mrs. Ellis was a member of the First Families of South Carolina, United Daughters of the Confederacy, New York C.S. Lewis Society and a member of Higher Ground Christian Fellowship Church. She was married to the late Calder Vincent Ellis, Sr.
Surviving are son, Calder Vincent Ellis, Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; sister Gussie Bell Nicholson of Columbia, granddaughters, Alyson Shirer of Lexington and Casey Page of Mooresville, N.C.; great-grandchildren; Catherine Shirer, James Calder Shirer and Carson Page; aunt, Adelaide Blount of Andrews. --The State Newspaper, March 8, 2002
ALLENDALE – John James Snelling, 80, of the Millette Community died Monday [NOTE: October 5, 1970] in a local hospital.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Speedwell United Methodist Church.
Mr. Snelling was a retired farmer and merchant. He was born in old Barnwell County, a son of the late W.S. and Almedia Harley Snelling. He was a Shriner.
Surviving are his widow, Mary Dunbar Snelling; a daughter, Mrs. B.R. Linley of Columbia, two sons, J.D. Snelling of Savannah, Ga. And W.J. Snelling of New York; and a sister, Mrs. B.H. Hayes of Barnwell.

COLUMBIA – Service for A. Birge Wise, 74, of 4710 Kilbourne Road, will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Kilbourne Park Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church Renovation Fund. Visitation will be Sunday 3-5 p.m. at the residence.
Mr. Wise died Saturday, Jan. 20, 1996. Born in Prosperity, Feb. 20, 1921, he was the only child of the late A.B. Wise and the late Ellen Werts Wise. He spent his childhood years in Ellenton, now a part of the Savannah River Plant, where his father was a new car dealer. After the death of his mother, he lived with an aunt, the late Addie Werts Bedenbaugh, in Pomaria, where he attended junior high and high school. He entered Newberry College in 1937, then transferred to the University of South Carolina in 1939 and graduated in the class of 1941. After two years of Law School, he passed the SC Bar in 1942. He entered the US Army-Air Force as meteorology Cadet, graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with his class in 1943. He later transferred to Radar Controller in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Afterwards, he returned to USC Law School, receiving his Law Degree in 1947. Beginning in the private practice of law in Columbia with the late Charles H. Gerald, Jr., he spent his entire life in the legal profession in Columbia, except for a brief recall in the US Air Force during the Korean War. In 1953, he became associated with his uncle, the late Robert K. Wise, forming the Law Firm of Wise, Wise and Shealy. He was a member of the SC Bar, the Richland County Bar Association, the American Legion Post #6, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 641 and the Columbia Civitan Club, serving as treasurer. He retired from the US Air Force as a Lt. Col. He was an active member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, serving many times as a Deacon, Trustee, and member of various committees. He taught Sunday School in the four year old department, where he was known by all the children as granddaddy Wise.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Mary Scott Wise of Columbia; sons Allen B. Wise, Jr. and Robert K. Wise both of Columbia; daughters Ellen Wise Brake of Dover, NH and Nancy Wise Pope of Columbia and seven grandchildren.
CHARLESTON – Services for Cecelia Pauline Black, 80 of 6 Moore Drive will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at John Wesley United Methodist Church, with burial in Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery of Millett. J. Henry Stuhr, Downtown Chapel, is in charge.
Miss Black died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1993. Born in Millett, she was a daughter of the late Edward Junius and Carrie Dunbar Black. She attended USC and retired from the accounting department of General Electric of New York City and Schenectady, N.Y.
Surviving are a brother, Charles Black of Charleston; and sisters, Katherine Black and Edwina Francese, both of Charleston, June Furman of Mount Pleasant and Polly Terrell of North Charleston.
Barnwell – Memorial services for Clarice Ashley, 71, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Church of the Holy Apostles with the Rev. Jim Abdy officiating. Ms. Ashley died Wednesday [NOTE: Oct. 9, 1996] at her home. Born [NOTE: June 24, 1925] in Ellenton, she was a daughter of the late William Elmore and Ethel Dunbar Ashley. She was a graduate of Coker College and retired from E.I. DuPont, Savannah River Plant, where she worked in the Health Physics Department for 30 years. She was a faithful member of the Church of the Holy Apostles and had resided in Barnwell since 1958.
AIKEN—Services for Charles Marion “C.M.” Holly Sr., 81, of 728 Rollingwood W. will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s United Methodist Church by the Revs. George S. Duffie, Jr., Eugene Mullikin and Kenneth Nelson. Mr. Holly died Monday, Feb. 12, 1996 at his residence. Born in Barnwell County, he was a son of the late Augustus and Fairey Ready Holly. He was an independent insurance agent and lived in Aiken for 48 years, since 1948. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Masons, Easter Seal Clinic board, Friday Men’s Prayer Breakfast, St. John’s administrative board of trustees and Fellowship Bible Class.
Surviving are his wife, Gwendolyn Cone Holly of Aiken; sons, Charles Marion Holly of Raleigh and James M. Holly of Aiken; a daughter, Carolyn Porter Beiers of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Cornelia Snelling
Mrs. Snelling, 61, of Millett ALLENDALE, March 19 – Mrs. J.J. Snelling, 61, of Millett, died in the Barnwell County Hospital Monday night after a lengthy illness.
She was the former Miss Cornelia Black, the daughter of the late Paul D. and Pauline Kirkland Black.
Mrs. Snelling was a life-long member of Speedwell Church where she served for many years as treasurer and active member of the W.S.C.S. of the church.
Survivors include her husband, J.J. Snelling of Millett; one daughter, Mrs. B.R. Linley of Columbia; two sons, J.D. Snelling of Savannah, Ga., and W.J. Snelling of New York City; three grandchildren, one sister, Miss Leize Black of Millett; and one brother, J.H. Black, of New York City.
Graveside services will be conducted at four p.m. Wednesday in the Speedwell Methodist Churchyard cemetery by the Rev. Robert S. Graves.
